Kabiru Umar Abubakar Dikko, popularly known as Kabiru Sokoto, is a convicted Nigerian terrorist and a member of the Boko Haram extremist group. Born in northern Nigeria, he masterminded the devastating Christmas Day bombing at St. Theresa’s Catholic Church in Madalla, Niger State, on December 25, 2011, an attack that killed 37 Christians.

Sokoto was first arrested but escaped custody the following day, prompting a nationwide manhunt before his rearrest a month later. On December 21, 2013, he was sentenced to life imprisonment, with the presiding judge noting his complete lack of remorse for the crime.

Speaking on how Kabiru Sokoto was arrested, a popular investigative journalist on Instagram identifed as Temilola Sobola shared a clip of Apostle Michael Olowo confidently disclosing that Boko Haram member, Kabiru Sokoto, was arrested at the Borno state lodge in Abuja when Shetima was governor.

This story shocked many Nigerians across social media platforms as they do not see it coming.

Apostle Michael Olowo said; “Kabiru Sokoto who bombed Nyanya in 2011, was caught and arrested in the house of Shettima in Abuja. What was he doing in his house if Shettima doesn’t know him. Today, Shettima is the Vice President. How do you win a war when terror!sts are ruling you? This is not a period of praying, it is a period of action.”

Confirming the circulating video, Punch reported in January 2023 that former APC Presidential Campaign Council Director, Hajia Naja’atu Mohammed, accused then–vice presidential candidate Kashim Shettima of sponsoring terrorism.

Speaking on Arise Television, Naja’atu alleged that notorious terrorist Kabiru Sokoto was once found and arrested in Shettima’s home when he was governor of Borno State. She argued that this, among other concerns, contributed to her resignation from the ruling party.

Naja’atu also questioned why Shettima would associate with a police officer facing drug-trafficking charges, insisting that such actions raise serious security concerns.

She further claimed that mineral exploitation is a key driver of terrorism in the North, describing terrorism and banditry as a “multi-billion-dollar industry” linked to defence spending, drug trafficking, illegal mining, and illicit oil bunkering.

According to her, powerful actors—including some governors—work with foreign mercenaries to displace communities and illegally extract resources such as gold in Zamfara and blue diamonds in the North-East.

Naja’atu concluded by questioning the imposition of a no-fly zone in Zamfara despite the state lacking an airport, alleging that aircraft still land and take off there for illegal mining operations.

The renewed allegations surrounding Vice President Kashim Shettima—particularly the claim that convicted terrorist Kabiru Sokoto was once arrested in his official residence—have stirred intense public debate and revived long-standing concerns about Nigeria’s fight against terrorism. With fresh comments from Apostle Michael Olowo, past statements from Naja’atu Mohammed, and reactions flooding social media, Nigerians are once again confronted with difficult questions about accountability, security, and trust in leadership.

As the controversy deepens, one key question remains:
Will these allegations prompt a transparent investigation, or will they fade like many others in Nigeria’s long list of unresolved national issues?
